We wanted to build a portal for the SQL report server on ​the platform that's integrated with Configuration Manager as well as on a platform ​the industry is moving towards. ​The portal had to be a simple solution that aggregates reports with a menu style making ​navigating ​for finding and accessing the right reports hosted by ​SSRS easy. ​ 

At least for the ​SCCM Guys, we ​know the default SCCM reports are not that pleasing to look at, but they do provide the data and meaningful information we need. So we have taken note of the most used and useful reports, ​data that is leveraged and recreated and customized reports ​making the easily accessible thru RicherReports report server portal report. ​​​ ​

Report Server Portal

For example, look at the screenshot of a ​SQL Reporting Services ​report server portal. ​The report server portal shows published reports and folders in a flat format that is liner and seems a bit difficult to search for a report due to some of the report names ​are truncated. Unless you access the same report often or have a saved bookmark to for a specific report, you’ll find yourself spending some time looking and searching for a desired report you might be interested in.

Compared to the SQL Reporting Services report server options for navigating reports, as you can see below that navigation are better, and groups reports in categories. If there is no report for a specific category, that category will not show. You can even publish your own custom reports to a SQL Reporting Services report server with a specific naming convention in the RicherReports default folder, your report will show it the RicherReports navigation panel. If you publish your custom report to any other folder, your report will show under Local Reports.

Local Reports

Local reports are any existing reports published to SQL Reporting Services that RicherReports discovers and aggregates these reports in the navigation panel located under Local Reports for a seamless integration into the RicherReports menu. 

Sub-Folder / Sub-Menus

RicherReports will also discover all reports published to the report server and group those reports based on the subfolders reports are located in, including creating a submenu structure based on reports location.

Recent Reports

RicherReports will also remember the last 10 recent reports that was access previously giving you the option to easily find and access commonly used reports.

There is an All collections default report that comes with Configuration Manager, Shown below… This report has three columns, Name, Comment and Collection ID.

Let’s call out the noticeable difference between these two reports. This report to the right shows 12 columns, Collection ID, Collection Name, Comment, Members, Numbers of clients, Number of Virtual Machines, MDM Managed, Site Code Is Approved, Is Blocked, And Last Refresh Time. ​

Column names speak for them self. But as you can see you get allot more helpful information at first glance across all selected collections when using All Devices Collections and Members report. This type of report provides the opportunity to compare collections.

Even More Details

The All Devices Collections and Members report goes even further, it also provides the option to click the + plus sign and drill into the members of each collection from the view of the same report.  

More and More

After drilling into the report, you'll also have the option to click on a computers name and get more information about that devices. The All Devices Collections and Members report will also show the virtual host if the devices happens to be a virtual machine.

First Glance

Let's look what you see on the first view when accessing a default Configuration Manager report on the Reporting point, which is actual SQL Reporting Services report server. The screen shots was taken when using Internet Explorer.

​Now lets compare a commonly used ConfigMgr report used for determining the Software Update compliance for a deployment ​group across a selected collection.

​Lets compare a Power Manager report, specifically the Power Management - Computer activity report. The screen shot below is the ConfigMgr default report version.

Now lets look at some custom ConfigMgr reports that are included with the RicherReports 2.0 Custom reporting solution. Starting from some of the default ConfigMgr reports, we elaborated a bit more on those reports to create the following custom ConfigMgr reports. These are some real examples of some of the reports that are included in RicherReports.

When you run the Device Collections and Members report, you're presented with a select option that allows you to select the collections you want to view and see more information for. Then once the report renders, you are presented with a wealth of information regarding the selected collection.

For example: you can see the number of members of a specific collection, number of systems that are clients, or virtual machines, if the device is managed by MDM or not. Active clients, number of sitecode's, if the computer is blocked or not. You can also see the operating system of devices, domain and even client version. You also have the option to client on a computer name and get more detailed information about that computer from the same report.
